Earlier this year, Fonterra’s 2030 climate targets were validated by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). SBTi is an internationally recognised organisation that defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting. This validation means our targets are classified as being in line with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Our on-farm target is also in line with SBTi’s Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) guidance. This guidance provides the world’s first standard method for companies in these sectors to set science-based targets that include land-based emission reductions and removals. For Fonterra, this a method that includes emissions from dairy.
Energy and Industrial
Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50.4% by FY2030 from a FY2018 base year.*
Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited also commits that 78.2% of its suppliers and customers by emissions, covering purchased goods and services, capital goods, upstream and downstream transportation and distribution, business travel, and processing of sold products, will have science-based targets by FY2028.
Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) guidance
Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited commits to reduce scope 1 and 3 FLAG GHG emissions from dairy by 30% per tonne of fat-and-protein-corrected milk by FY2030 from a FY2018 base year.**
Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited also commits to no deforestation across its primary deforestation-linked commodities, with a target date of 31st December 2025.
Fonterra Director of Sustainability, Charlotte Rutherford, says we are extremely proud of the work we’ve done in this space as there is a lot of effort that goes into the verification process. Having these credible, science-backed targets is important to Fonterra and our NZMP™ customers. Moving forward, it is imperative that we continue to make progress towards these targets.
* The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
** The target includes FLAG emissions and removals.
