Micronutrient status influences brain development in young children significantly and has an ongoing impact on cognitive function in older individuals. 

 

Some of the key nutrients playing a role in brain development and cognitive function are: vitamins B2, B12 and vitamin C support nerves, while vitamin B7 supports brain cells and B5 is involved in production of neurotransmitters and hormones. Zinc and vitamin C play roles in communication between brain cells, and iron is essential for transporting oxygen to the brain.

Healthy Teeth

Childhood is an important time for establishing healthy teeth, it’s when we transition from our baby or milk teeth to our adult teeth. 

 

Having the right nutrition is an important contributor, some of the key nutrients playing a role are: calcium and phosphorus contribute to the structure of teeth. Vitamin D helps distribute calcium and phosphorus within the body making it available for incorporation into teeth, while also increasing the absorption of calcium. Vitamin C is important for gum health ensuring that teeth are well supported.

Zinc and iron are also vital for the function of the immune system with low intakes associated with decreased immune cell function and increased risk of infections.
